I was in hancock Fabrics today and found both a second shuttle for 50% off (Here's hoping I can make something more than "daisies" now.) and some tatting thread. The thread was next to the embroidery floss, and the shuttle was in the bargain bin.

Next to the half-off bins were two displays, one bronze, on silver, of vintage reproduction sewing gear. There were scissor holders, needle cases, thimbles, etc. and tatting shuttles. The shuttles looked kinda flimsy to me. Does anyone here have experience with these? My birthday's coming up and I might ask for one if I'm wrong about the quality.

My understanding is that those are not good for actual tatting. Apparently, there's a jump-ring on it (to allow it to be attached to a chatelaine) that would interfere with the thread. I can't remember if I've heard anything about how flimsy or not they might be, but if I bought one of those, I think it'd probably just be for display. :)

One of my friends gave me one for a wedding shower gift. I used jewelry pliers to remove the jump ring and I was able to successfully tat with it. That said, it wasn't the easiest to use since it is larger than my usual shuttles and the metal is indeed flimsy. I tend to overwrap my shuttles, letting the plastic warp a little in the process. Where plastic will return to it's normal shape, I'm afraid the metal wouldn't. So, yes they are pretty and can be used to tat, but they aren't the best tool for the job. Would be good for "show tatting", like for a demo or something.
