Hi, I'm also new to tatting kind of, I learned about a month and a half ago and have been perusing livejournal for a community ever since. I only found you guys a week ago or so. The reason - under "interests" you have "needle tatting" and "shuttle tatting" but not "tatting" so if you search for "tatting" under interests your community doesn't show up. That ought to be fixed, I think.

Anyway, I was wondering, since I've been tatting little tidbits of stuff but nothing really, what's a good project for a beginner? A lot of the stuff in books just daunts me. By the way, I shuttle tat (I tried needle tatting a bit, but didn't like it as much).

sorry for the double post, but one more thing - I have been looking everywhere for instructions on split rings, split chains, etc. and it's been driving me wild. They were apparently invented in the past 10 years or at least popularized then. The only instructions I've found are online and difficult to follow. Help! I don't even know what they ARE. Thank you

I finally figured out what I was doing wrong, thanks to the help from this group. I was being too tense and tight about things and I was pulling the stitch tight before trying to flip it. But now that I've relaxed a bit, I'm able to make rings.

Here is my first attempt! It only took me about five hours (I had lots of "help" from my 20-month-old). lol

I know it's not very even - I'm just happy that I can do it. :D
