hanky edging update

I had started this edging before I read the comments, so it's not the prettiest pattern, but I decided to keep going with it until I'd finished the shuttle. Doing it while watching TV has lead to me making several mistakes, one halfway down the long side quite glaring. So now I'll try with the other pattern with the suggested ammendments. How do others avoid making mistakes? Any tips?
