tattingWell, I figured it out and have two objects and a few sore fingers to show for it. This is pearl cotton, size 8 in bright red. The color's a little off in the photos.
Here's my bookmark. Pre-blocking and pre-stiffening. You can see on the lower left part, how I started out very tight and ended up getting looser. I now know to go with the looser stitch for ease of pulling it out should I make a mistake and it's easier to weave the ends in.
And here's a little butterfly for my mom.

I'm also wondering what size thread is the most common to use?
