[identity profile] ne-today.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] tatting
I've been thinking about learning to tat for awhile now, but just tonight sort of tried to pick it up. All I've done is the basic stitch--and I don't think anyone in the course of human history has been quite as slow at it--but it's going well and I'm looking forward to more complicated patterns.

This is a great community.

Feel lucky that there's only really one stitch...and I bet we all were every bit as slow. I'm a quick learner on most things, but that took me a few days to get...

Speaking from the experience of teaching, everyone takes time to pick it up at first. the first piece of thread looks like something a tangle fairy was playing with typically. I suggest usually starting with chairs using different colors on the shuttle and ball. The idea is that you can see when the thread "flipped" and see if it doesn't stay "flipped".

Keep at it! It's a worthwhile skill.

Welcome to one of the most addicting crafts I've found! :D

And trust me, if you think you're the "slowest tatter ever," you'll eventually find someone who took even longer than you at some aspect! For example, I found the basic stitch pretty easy, and split rings weren't even too bad... But it took me forever to sort out split chains! And I'm "skeered" of clunies yet. LOL
