[identity profile] honestgraft.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] tatting
Hello all!

I am a tatting novice & new member of the community. I finally had time to shop for tatting supplies today (mainly needles & thread). Unfortunately, our local Michael's does not carry tatting needles. I combed their notions aisle, but without any luck. When I asked an employee for help, she looked at me as if I were crazy! Was I looking in the wrong place? Is there a craft store better suited to tatting needs?

I would appreciate any suggestions. I am very eager to give tatting a try! Thank you.

The (crappy -- much smaller and less stock than some others I've been to) Michaels near me has some tatting supplies -- but only shuttles, not needles. They keep them in one of two places: with the embroidery floss (where tatting thread is as well) or with the sewing notions.

AC Moore (which you may or may not have near you!) is another big box craft store and my local one has tatting needles, shuttles, and thread in the emboidery floss section.

I haven't seen any tatting stuff at JoAnn's.

I have seen tatting needles at my local fabric shops as well -- in the sewing notions.

Good luck! you can always order online from Lacis (http://lacis.com/catalog/).

I have seen at the large Joannes a needle tatting book with needles, and the clover shuttles, at michaels i've seen the shuttles. You will find the Most variety on line or at Lace events.(guild meetings, lace days and conferences, in person is my absolute favorite way to shop- if you are interested you can send me an email with your town and state and i can look through my IOLI list of Lace groups to see if there is one that meets in your area. jencie74 at yahoo dot com
otherwise lacis, snowgoose, holly VanSciver bobbin lace and Lacy Susan are all wonderful lace goods vendors.
Enjoy the tatting bug :-)

I have a Hobby Lobby near me, and they carry both shuttles and needles there, as well as a couple of books. Along with the Bates and Clover shuttles, they have the Aero shuttle knock-off, as well as the Tatsy 4.5" shuttles on a regular basis.

Here in France I have never seen a tatting needle for sale anywhere! I buy 99% of my supplies on-line, and have had really good service. I can certainly recommend Handy Hands at

I haven't actually done needle tatting, only shuttle, but best luck anyway!
