I looked through older post but saw nothing on this. I am very, very new to tatting. I can understand the written patterns mostly. But the patterns that are just pictures . . . how am I suppose to know where to begin the pattern if they don't say?

*grin* You're the exact opposite of me. I learned tatting following patterns in diagrams, and I'm now trying my first written out pattern and finding it slow work...

Most of the diagrams I've seen will either have an arrow or a star or something where you start, or will label the bits and pieces with letters that you should follow alphabetically.

I am trying to teach myself how to do tatting, but am having some troubles with it. If you find any good beginner patterns, let me know!

What troubles are you having? Maybe someone in the community can help. :) Ooo, and there are some pretty good videos on YouTube & on Sharon Briggs' site.

I have only found videos with no sound. It would be helpful to have the person doing the stitch to explain what she is doing. I really would like someone to teach me in person, but I don't know any one in the the Twin Cities area in Minnesota who does tatting.

Well, this video is part 1 of 3 at YouTube. I think I've seen others out there with sound too. Try searching for "tatting" at YouTube.

I don't have a list of tatters & locations, but you might try contacting Sue Hanson, the list owner of Here Be Tatters at Yahoo Groups. I'm pretty sure she's got a list of at least the members of her group & their locations. (She's in the UK, so she may just send your contact info to anybody in MN. I'd give her the name of your town & some of the surrounding towns, just in case.)
