a hopefully rare ADMIN post
Apr. 12th, 2009 04:25 pmI'm pretty much editing the same post from the LJ side for this one. If you read it there, you already know all of this.
We have a few rudimentary Community Rules. Mostly, these are in place to head off any drama before it ever occurs (and happily that's never happened on the LJ side! Let's hope that tradition continues on DW!)
First, a bit of explanation, or Why Did We Bother?
The rules (2-2b) about patterns are purely for copyright reasons. We want to protect you (and the community in general) from any copyright-wars. The easiest way to do this is by saying "No Patterns At All," but that's a little strict. So: If you write a pattern and wish to share it with the community, feel free! If you need help with a particular part of a pattern, please go ahead and post that section (and give us the info about where you found the original pattern so those who have it can try to help). But please don't post somebody else's entire pattern without specific permission from the author/designer/copyright holder.
We've also added a rule about putting large images behind cuts. Right now, we don't have a specific size that must go behind a cut. So far, we've not had any real problems with this, so whatever you've done in the past is probably fine. If your image breaks somebody's reading page, we'll ask you to put it behind a cut. And if you post lots of images, we may ask you to at least put the majority behind a cut (again, saving folks' r-pages).
I don't think we need a DW tatting email yet as there is currently an email account for the LJ tatting-mods (or maintainers, or whatever you want to call us. I'd prefer something like "Tatting Comm Goddesses" but somehow I don't think that's gonna happen....) If you're ever unsure about whether something is okay for the community or just want to run a question by us, please feel free to email us at that address (see below). At least one of us checks it every day. Keep in mind, there are currently onlythree one of us (at least until my lovely co-conspirators haul their butts over here, eep!), and we're all I'm in North America. Sometimes, a bit of patience may be required. We have to sleep some time, y'know.... (Yeah, yeah, those of you who know me are wondering when exactly I do that. I wonder, too...)
Oh, and those of you on LJ's
knitting may think this format looks a leeeetle bit familiar? Because it does. Our rules are quite blatantly inspired by theirs. Thanks,
knitting-Mods, for such wonderful inspiration!
On to the:
Community Rules
1. Play nice. :) Follow the usual "courtesy" rules just like you would if we were all sitting together in somebody's living room.
2. We love tatting patterns and pictures of tatting, however: Please don't post copyrighted material. That means you can't post an entire pattern that you personally did not write (even if it's free, even if it's in an out-of-print magazine or book). It also means that you absolutely can post excerpts from patterns if you're looking for help!
2a. Please feel free to post links to patterns you've found online! Especially if you're posting a picture of something you've tatted and want to share your source!
2b. If your pattern is from a book or magazine, please post any info you have about the source: title, author &/or publisher (if you have those), link to a place where the rest of us can buy our own copies, etc.
3. Please place large images behind a cut. See FAQ #88 for instructions on how to place a cut tag in your post.
4. Most importantly, have fun! :)
If you have any questions or concerns about anything in
tatting, you may email the community maintainers: ljtatting AT gmail DOT com -- This address is checked daily by the owner/maintainers. Currently, we're all in rather similar time zones, so please be patient. Your messages will be answered as quickly as possible!
Thanks!

P.S.: If anybody has something they'd like to add, please mention it in a comment. I'm sure I probably missed something really obvious, and I'm relying on you members to point out my "duh!" moments. :)

Date: 2009-04-21 07:08 am (UTC)OK, mastering the flip. Basically: patience, grasshopper! And keep trying! :) Seriously, it just takes repeated attempts until eventually you'll just "get" it. I have talked to dozens & dozens (hundreds? maybe) of tatters, & that's been the consensus among all of them so far. Make sure you're relaxing the fingers of the hand holding the "ring" or "ball" thread while you're tugging (snapping, gently) the "shuttle" thread. Sometimes it helps to do that part r-e-a-l-l-y slowly a few times until you really see what you're doing (there are a few videos online that you can pause frame-by-frame while you try to get it), but I have to admit it's not like knitting where it's easier to slow somebody down to see that transfer.
Hope that helps!

Date: 2009-04-21 03:15 pm (UTC)somebody recommended this book and DVD set, which has been extremely helpful! I think I'm just not quite understanding how my left hand should be manipulating things (I'm very, very right hand dominant). I can't seem to get a ring started, for example... this is when I end up making a mess. :)
I will definitely keep at it! I love how tatted lace looks.

Date: 2009-04-22 04:02 am (UTC)Hmmm. Have you tried chains yet? Some people seem to have better results starting with chains -- especially using 2 different high-contrast colors. That way, you can tell right away if the flip has happened or not. :)
I'm very right-dominant, too. For me, it helped to just loop the thread around the left hand & not move it too much other than relaxing/tautening the fingers as needed (in chains, I do wrap the thread around my 2 last fingers to control tension). The right hand is mostly for moving the shuttle back & forth (or grabbing the thread when I've let too much come off the shuttle).
