So I was attempting to learn the pattern "queen of hearts" by Mary konior. Thankfully I test new patterns before attempting them with good thread so I can get the hang of the pattern and any new techniques. This was my first attempt at reading a charted pattern. I may need to try again on this one.

I know ... I'm pretty determined at this point. I feel like I may have to make a few minor adjustments to the pattern though. I always seem to have a problem with patterns that are a little dense like this one. I do better with the really fine, delicate pieces.

Check out my most recent post with the second try. It did come out a little bit better for sure, but I'm still thinking I may have to make a few minor adjustments to the pattern.

you did pretty well for a first go =)

if I might make a suggestion, when you re-tat the pattern, try for smaller picots - the size of the picots make a big difference in many patterns

but good first try at the pattern; some of them are harder to read than others

I think you're right Tx. Part of the problem is that my crochet hook is too large and it's the only one I have at the moment. I just ordered the little set of 3 sized hooks to hang around the neck so that should be waiting for me when i get home next week. Also, since this was the first time I'd worked from a visual pattern, I had trouble reversing the work in my mind's eye and making the proper joins.

the crochet hook size would make a big difference in the joins (I'm a needle-tatter who attempted shuttle-tatting a few times, but then lost her shuttle & haven't replaced it yet)

oh, I see, the visual only patterns...I have yet to tackle one of those bad boys: my preference is for written or written AND visual

I started off as a needle tatter myself. I travel so much though that the shuttles are easier to travel with. I had a bad habit of breaking needles, or at the very least severely bending them. Also, I've found that with the shuttle I'm able to produce much flatter, neater looking work, although I'm definitely much faster using the needle.

I think I'm with you as far as the visual patterns with instructions go, although the book I'm using right now does a pretty good job of explaining some of the new techniques it introduces in the various pattern collections.
