I just joined this group - here's my obligatory "Hi, I'm here" post! I haven't been tatting for long - just a few months - and I admit I don't know much, but what better place to learn than here? Perhaps I'd know more about tatting if I didn't spend so much time online.... but anyways, I'm here!

Date: 2004-01-26 04:56 am (UTC)I sort of half turned my head, "What?"
My husband just said, "Snow monster!"
We used to spend hours playing Skifree.

Date: 2004-01-26 06:20 am (UTC)Anyway, welcome to the group. We've been a bit quiet lately, but hopefully that will change. I'm not a mod or the group owner, but I think it's safe to say there are lots of folks willing to help with any questions you might have. I recognize a few names among our members that I've also seen in other tatting e-lists, so we've got wonderful resources!

Date: 2004-01-26 11:21 pm (UTC)Earlier today I started on this thing (http://www.geocities.com/emmacrew/tatting/snowflakes/spangleflake.html)... whatever that is. I don't quite understand the whole pattern yet, but since I'm not yet at the parts I don't understand, it doesn't really matter. (Winking emoticon)

Date: 2004-01-26 11:53 pm (UTC)As for the Yahoo lists, most that I've seen are very welcoming to newbies. I'm generally a lurker, but mostly b/c I'm so swamped here & with work, etc. I do try to help where I can there too.
Oh! and while it may seem that some of us have "centuries of experience," many of us are just as new as you! I've only been tatting consistently for a little under 3 years. I learned about 5 years ago, but had put it down for my xstitch (which I haven't touched in 3 years *embarrassed grin*) when I couldn't find any patterns.
Split rings aren't really that hard. Are you shuttle tatting or needle? If shuttle, have you ever made a stitch that didn't flip? That's what you'll be doing with split rings - lots of unflipped stitches! Please post any questions you have, & I'm sure we can find somebody to help!!

Date: 2004-01-27 12:28 am (UTC)(But I'm cheating. The pattern calls for 80 and 20; all I have is 70 and 10. *snicker snicker* )
I shuttle tat - I didn't realise there was such a thing as needle tatting until I started looking for patterns online. All the book from the library had was basic instruction or long convoluted doilies. I still don't know what needle tatting is, but I haven't tried to find out. I'm blaming it on my Biology course and the Nights on Broadway.

Date: 2004-01-27 01:28 am (UTC)I haven't been posting much of anything anywhere lately because of school...it's been like three weeks since I even looked at my comm filter (I keep tatting on my friends filter though because it doesn't take up too much space)...

Date: 2004-01-27 05:16 am (UTC)Oooo.... You have size 70 available? Locally, or do you buy online? I'm soooooo jealous of folks who have lots of supplies available locally. I can't afford very often to purchase stuff online (at least not yet), so I'm mostly stuck with the kindness of friends or whatever can be found (mostly Wally-World, meaning size 10).
Needle tatting basically wraps the thread around a needle (can be purchased special for tatting or one can just use a tapestry needle, etc). From what I understand, never having tried it myself, many find it easier to learn needle tatting as all of the stitches are unflipped. *shrug* Hmmmm.... "Nights on Broadway" - is that a Bee Gees reference for NYC or something else? If the former, :D I love those guys!

Date: 2004-01-27 07:55 pm (UTC)Yeah, I'm a part-time BeeGees fan; also a full-time Monkees fan, a Parrothead-in-training, and a fan of Barry Manilow and Crosby Stills Nash and/or/sometimes Young. And some other random bands which aren't as well-known as the ones I just mentioned. Like The Buffalo Springfield (I crack me up! Hahahahahaha!)

Date: 2004-01-27 08:57 pm (UTC)Oooo.... She's young & has good taste in music! Now, how d'you feel about Rick Springfield?? If you like his old Working Class Dog & Living in Oz stuff, you should know that his new CD is coming out next month: s/d/a/a official site

Date: 2004-01-27 11:10 pm (UTC)When not working on the other star-spangled snowflake, today I've been doing a butterfly (http://www.geocities.com/birgit_ph/butterflypage.html) - mostly to finish up the pink thread I have on one shuttle. It's suprised me how many flutterbye patterns exist!

Date: 2004-01-28 12:25 am (UTC)And yes, I think butterflies, snowflakes, & crosses are probably the most popular patterns out there. :)

Date: 2004-01-28 02:33 am (UTC)I guess I dragged that gag along a bit too far. *g* I was referring to both "The Last of the Mohicans" and "M*A*S*H*"; there's a reason my brother often calls my rodent persona a dense little chipmunk! (But I'm a chinchilla....)
I'm about to embark into the world of split rings... maybe. I've got a couple of shuttles with varigated thread to practice on in front of me, and three different instruction pages open. *wishes self luck*
